Luminox EVO Navy SEAL Watch Review: Is It For You?

Table Of Contents

If you’ve ever searched for watches – be it on the internet or around town, you surely would have heard of Luminox at least once.

The brand is best known for its “always visible technology,” which allows users to tell the time regardless of the lighting conditions. The company incorporates unique tritium inserts into the watch, which are what enable the long-term luminescence.

If you’re on the lookout for an everyday watch that not just looks great but also boasts excellent features, Luminox’s EVO Navy SEAL watch may be perfect for you.

Luminox is also known for manufacturing military-grade watches for the U.S. Air Force, the SEALs, and even the U.S. Coast Guard, among many others.

But just because the company has an excellent reputation doesn’t mean the watch is worth the money.

Only an unbiased review can help you figure that out.

So, we did it for you.

Design

The EVO watch is part of the Sea collection of Luminox watches – the company has three other collections called Air, Land, and Space, all of which have different features.

The EVO boasts a sleek all-black design; however, the company does not use the term “blackout” in the advertising to describe the watch’s design. It is meant to represent the watch’s visibility in low-light environments.

The numerals are embossed in white, and the date display is also white, making the Navy SEAL watch easy to read in the sunlight. The date display is positioned by the 3’o clock marking, giving the watch a neat look.

Not only is the EVO attractive, but it is also comfortable, and much of the comfort that the watch provides is owed to the material used to make the strap and the case.

The polyurethane material used to make the two components not only makes the watch comfortable but also a lot more durable.

But that being said, the strap of the watch is known to weaken and break over time. Luckily, finding a more durable rubber strap for the EVO watch shouldn’t be too difficult.

The unidirectional bezel is one of the best design features of the watch since it does a lot more than holding the robust crystal in place. While the EVO isn’t a diving watch per se, you could take it diving with you since the bezel allows you to keep track of time underwater.

The texture on the edge of the watch shows that attention was paid to the customer’s needs. You will be able to grip the watch with relative ease underwater, and since it only turns in one direction, it will always be accurate.

The Luminox EVO watch is shock-resistant, so if you’re a rough user, you have nothing to worry about.

Here are some other highlights of the watch’s design:

Large Lightweight Case

The case of the watch is 44mm wide and 12mm thick, and the all-black construction makes its large size a lot more attractive. While the size of the case may make the watch seem hefty, since it is made from carbon-reinforced polymer, it is quite lightweight.

Large and Visible Dials

The EVO watch comes with luminous Arabic numeral hour markers, and since they are black, they blend in with the dial perfectly.

While the black-on-black design may not make sense to you at first glance, the tritium tubes inserted into the markers will make both the hands and the markers visible when it’s dark. The tritium tubes can last for decades, so you don’t have anything to worry about in terms of longevity, either.

Durable Strap

The double-locking buckle and the 23mm-wide Silicon band won’t break and will work just as well on the ground and underwater. While the polyurethane material isn’t the most durable material out there, it looks great and is durable enough for most.

Rugged Bezel and Dial

The EVO’s bezel is made from carbon-reinforced polymer and complements the case of the watch with its all-black construction. On the other hand, the dial is constructed with hardened crystal that can absorb shock and is shatter resistant. It also boasts scratch-resistant properties.

Genuine Swiss Quartz

It comes equipped with Swiss Quartz, known for its high accuracy and low power requirements.

One other design detail we loved in the Luminox watch is the inclusion of Arabic numbers that are embossed in bold. The numbers make the watch a lot easier to read both in the sunlight and complete darkness, especially since they contrast so starkly against the watch’s black dial.

On top of that, the highly luminous tritium inserts are surprisingly bright, making the watch that much easier to read in the dark.

Features

One of the most impressive features of the Navy SEAL watch is undoubtedly the tritium illumination. The tubes can keep the watch readable in the dark for up to 25 years without needing solar power or battery power.

Furthermore, the company claims that the tritium accents it incorporates in its products are a hundred times brighter than accents on other luminous watches.

And this claim is considered factual by most customers since the accents are strikingly brighter than what other watches on the market have.

Other than the embossed Arabic numerals, the accents on the three hands of the watch and the markers on the unidirectional bezel also light up. You must note that all the hour markers light up blue.

The watch is that it is visible deep underwater, and the dual-colored accents make the EVO easy to read. On top of all of this, the EVO watch also boasts a low magnetic signature, which is rare. If your work involves using a compass or magnets, or if you work at the airport, this is the right watch to get.

But perhaps the most impressive feature of the watch is its water resistance. The Navy SEAL watch is water-resistant up to 200m, making it one of the best value for money watches in the market.

Pros and Cons

Like all other watches on the market, the Luminox EVO watch also has its advantages and disadvantages.

Knowing both the pros and cons of the product will help you make a better decision:

Pros

  • Black-ops look – super sleek all-black design
  • Large body yet maintains a low-key look
  • Impressively lightweight
  • Well-protected crown
  • Robust construction; boasts a carbon-reinforced body and a scratch-resistant fiberglass polymer dial
  • Excellent value for money; costs a lot less than watches with the same features
  • Comfortable and durable strap and band
  • Top-notch tritium tubes make the watch extremely easy to read in the dark
  • Water-resistant up to 200m
  • Uses Swiss Quartz, making it reliable
  • Low magnetic signature
  • Great for large (up to 8-inch) wrists

Cons

  • The band slips out of place at times and is often the first component to break.
  • It does not come with a screw-down crown, which is preferred by divers and those engaged in water sports. However, the double-security gasket keeps the hardware protected from corrosion.
  • The strap can be hard to replace since 23mm straps are not very popular and can be hard to find.
  • The watch does not have a backlight that you can turn on and off.
  • Its larger body makes it difficult to wear for those with smaller wrists.
  • Mineral crystal used is durable, but not the best. A sapphire crystal glass would have been more apt for the watch.
  • Some customers complain that the tritium tubes are very thin. However, these pieces are likely faulty units that can be replaced for free.

But perhaps the biggest downside of getting the Luminox EVO watch is that it is a favorite of counterfeiters.

Regardless of if you’re buying online or locally, you have to be very careful, so you don’t end up buying a fake watch.

Many experts claim that fake EVO watches are noticeably shinier than the originals. They also found that fakes don’t use the same font on the dial.

Verdict

If you’re looking to get a watch that you can rely on for years, Luminox is one of the best brands you can go for. The EVO boasts a highly-functional and sleek design, and pictures often don’t do justice to how great the watch looks when you wear it.

The all-black design will make you look dapper. Also, since black is a neutral color, you can wear the EVO on any occasion – whether you’re going to work or surfing.

While the watch looks great and offers excellent value for money, it does have its issues. The band on the strap can break within months, and the chances of you getting your hands on a counterfeit are much higher.

Overall, though, it’s durable, lightweight, water- and scratch-resistant, making it a watch you can wear in extreme conditions.

If you’re on the lookout for a watch that doesn’t break the bank but is comfortable, accurate, and will serve you for years, you cannot go wrong with the Luminox EVO Navy SEAL watch.

It’s worth every penny you pay for it.

Its tough to decide between the mountains and the ocean so I try and travel alot and bring my Australian Cattle dog where I can (but he does not like boats).
