G-Shock G-Steel GST-B100XA-1A Review: Great Looks, Better Features

Table Of Contents

If you love to collect watches or are just looking to get one that will serve you well every day for years, there’s a good chance that you’ll want a mechanical watch.

The G-Steel GST-B100XA-1A is designed with the style-forward professional in mind, but it’s attractive look can often be deceiving:

It has all of the features of a traditional G-Shock watch, albeit in a suaver aesthetic.

However, with the surge of modern timepieces in the market, it’s important to know whether the GST-B100XA-1A is worth the money at all before you decide to buy it.

And only an unbiased review can offer you that insight.

So, we went ahead and made one for you.

Design

At first glance, you may find it hard to believe that a timepiece as elegant as the GST-B100XA-1A is a G-Shock. It does look a lot more mature than its counterparts.

The G-Steel watch comes with a stainless steel body, enhancing the modern look and making it resistant to corrosion. The four stainless steel tubes incorporated into the design hold both the case and the bezel in place. These tubes are so responsible for the watch’s shock-resistance.

The watch’s middle case is made from stainless steel and resin and features an attractive carbon bezel. The caseback is also made from stainless steel and resin.

But perhaps what’s more impressive is that G-Shock only uses a resin that is amalgamated with TORAYCA® carbon-fiber material, which itself is developed with NANOALLOY® technology.

The resulting laminated material is lightweight and durable and adds a tactical undertone to the elegant watch. The unique material also makes the watch outstandingly shock-resistant.

While the watch looks elegant and sophisticated, it is rugged and can handle wear and tear.

The case of the watch is quite large at 58.1 mm × 53.8 mm × 14.1 mm. But the piece is impressively lightweight at just 104 grams.

The Straps and Band

It’s also impressive that the band is also made from resin, and while the face has blue elements, the band has blue and black underneath it. The watch’s carbon fiber elements complement the stainless steel beautifully, and the fiber beautifully catches light.

The sapphire crystal dial is clear and does not crack easily, leaving you nothing to worry about if you’re a rough user.

The band isn’t slim, though – coming in at a thickness of 14 mm. However, since the band is crafted from carbon fiber and resin, we can’t label it a disadvantage, much less a dealbreaker.

The band remains lightweight and flexible, making it possible for you to wear the watch every day without feeling any discomfort or pressure.

The straps of the watch are just as unique as the bands and the case. They are made using a bi-color molding process, which makes it possible for Casio to decorate the watch’s outer surface with a pattern.

The blue accents on the dial of the watch go well with the inner portion of the band since the inner portion is also blue. It’s subtle details like these that bring together the many different components of the watch in complete unison aesthetically.

It’s also worth noting that the bezel, case, and strap all have many different textures. But the lightness in design can often fool a customer at first glance because the watch is exceptionally sturdy.

The Dial and App

The GST-B100XA-1A boasts a scratch-resistant and non-reflective sapphire glass that makes the watch a lot easier to read.

It also comes with a screw-lock crown, making it the diver’s choice. The watch is water-resistant up to 200m, which isn’t surprising since the G-Shock series is known for its ruggedness.

But the G-Steel GST-B100XA-1A has an unexpected but welcome feature that makes it different from most other Casio watches – it comes with a wireless Bluetooth function. You can connect the watch to your phone with the push of a button.

The feature opens up a lot more possibilities for the watch. Connecting the watch to your phone allows it to sync time information from an internet server, making it accurate to the millisecond.

You can also use the G-Shock connected app to control the watch. You can set alarms, use times, correct hand alignment, set up a phone finding function, and even set up home city time swapping.

You will agree that the phone is a lot easier to operate than a watch, and Casio takes full advantage of this by allowing you to perform several operations on your phone directly.

Not only is the app useful, but it’s also really cool to be able to use a watch as stylish as the G-Steel GST-B100XA-1A in this way.

Overall, the design of the watch is attractive, and it goes well with all outfits. If you are on the lookout for a watch that you can use on a daily basis, the GST-B100XA-1A is an excellent choice.

Features

It’s not surprising to find a G-Shock watch loaded with tons of features. However, as mentioned earlier, the watch comes with a Bluetooth feature, making it very different from most other Casio watches.

To use Bluetooth on the watch, you will need to install the G-Shock app on your phone first. Without the app, you won’t be able to connect your phone to the watch. Fortunately, though, the app is both easy to use and bug-free, making the experience easy.

One feature that we found very impressive and satisfying is that when you unbox the watch and remove it from its packaging, it instantly finds its geographic location and sets itself.

One feature that the GST-B100XA-1A inherits from its counterparts is the “Tough Solar” feature. The watch boasts a rechargeable battery, which can recharge itself via the sunlight that hits the watch’s dial.

The watch will use even the comparatively weak lighting in your office as a source of power. Depending on how you use the watch, the watch can remain functional anywhere from five to 22 months without any exposure to light.

It’s also important to remember that the G-Steel GST-B100XA-1A is a G-Shock watch. It comes with all the features that you expect to see in a G-Shock timepiece.

It comes with a timer and also a split-time chronograph that boasts the ability to measure 24 hours. The daily alarm features, full auto-calendar accurate till 2099, and the battery level indicator make using the watch that much easier.

It also boasts separate date and day displays, three analog hands, and a second-time zone feature.

Connecting to The App

Connecting the watch to the app is a lot easier than you’d think. To pair the G-Steel to your phone, you must hold down the Connect button on the watch. It will switch to pair mode, post which you must pair it from your phone within 30 seconds.

It’s worth mentioning that the application can remember all the watches you’ve linked to, so if you have a collection of Casio watches, you will be able to switch between them seamlessly.

Battery Life

While the G-Steel GST-B100XA-1A isn’t a smartwatch that will keep track of your steps or notify you when your phone’s ringing, it does allow you to control it from your phone.

The watch can last up to 22 months on a single charge, and to recharge the watch, all you need to do is take it outdoors. One convenient feature is that the app shows you the status of the solar cell, allowing you to ensure that the watch is charging.

If you use the Bluetooth function and all the other features, the watch will last for five-months without needing exposure to light.

A few other notable features of the watch are:

Scratch Resistance

The G-Shock watch comes with a clear sapphire glass cover, protecting it from scratches and making it easy to read.

Phone Finder

The watch comes with a “Find” button, and if you link the watch to your phone, pressing it will help you locate your phone.

Water Resistance

The piece is water-resistant up to 200 meters, so you can take it surfing or diving without worrying about it breaking.

Verdict

If you don’t mind the idea of having a Bluetooth-enabled watch that has no fitness or notification functionalities, then the watch is worth every penny it costs.

You must remember that it is a G-Shock watch and not a smartwatch, so you cannot compare it with a smartwatch.

It offers many advantages – it is robust, looks great in any setting and with any outfit, and boasts a large size yet remains comfortable.

However, if you have a smaller wrist, the watch may not look good on you, and you must avoid getting it if that is the case.

If you have a 7-inch wrist, though, the piece will perfect on your arm and elevate the look of any outfit.

All in all, its interesting set of features and great looks make it a watch that is hard NOT to recommend.

Its tough to decide between the mountains and the ocean so I try and travel alot and bring my Australian Cattle dog where I can (but he does not like boats).
